My Jupiter is in Leo, But My Walls Are Still white.
Often, when I’m called in to help with choosing color for interiors, my clients have a good idea of what they want and don’t want. Stacks of paint samples are piled around the room, fabric samples stacked on a counter, and advertisements are ripped from home magazines. Sometimes, existing pieces of art or furniture dictate how the color will go together in the space. These clients may feel stuck, but they’re in great shape because they’re already editing their likes and dislikes, and know what they’re after. I’m more of a color referee, than a dictator.
And then there are times when a client is faced with an empty slate. With no existing pieces to dictate our direction, nor any preference or prejudice about color, we have to find color inspiration somewhere else. We go through magazines and exchange numerous emails to find something that clicks, and we go from there. I’m there as a detective, drawing out their true colors.
But what if we decided that this very sensible approach was entirely too sensible? What if we looked to the stars to find your perfect palette? Would that be any more risky than trying to find color inspiration as you stand in a badly-lit store poring over thousands of paint colors, while listening to elevator music? No, I didn’t think so either. So I’ve created your very own paint color horoscope.
Aries – You’re a confident soul. Your energy is boundless, and you’ve even considered doing all of your own painting once your colors are chosen. A true leader, you’ve instead decided to enlist the help of family and friends… while you head to the golf course. Oh, did I also mention that you’re very clever? An Aries has the confidence to live with bold colors and strong design.
Here is an energetic palette just right for Aries:
Taurus – You are a strong and sensible type, with friendships to be envied. Your loyalty and devotion is honorable, but that couch you’ve refused to replace for the last 20 years, is not. Taureans love palettes that reflect their bond with the Earth.
Though change does not always come easily to you, here is a palette to help you through the transition to a new Taurus:
Gemini – Your astrological symbol is the Twins. Whenever a Gemini is in the room it’s an instant party. Clever, and always one-step ahead, the Geminis reading this will have already skipped ahead to see their palette. Geminis thrive in lively environments and warm colors.
Oh, hello Gemini! Sorry it took us so long to get here to your lively palette:
Cancer – The homebody of the astrological world, you work hard to create a warm and nurturing place to share with family and friends. Choosing colors for your home is very important to you, and any difficulty in creating the perfect atmosphere can leave you downright crabby. A soft and soothing palette is just right for you.
Here is a palette designed to evoke moonlit nights, and calm seas, just as the Cancer would have it:
Leo – Fiery Leo is the theatrical character of the zodiac. Known for giving fabulous parties, seeking careers in the limelight, and being the center of attention, Leos often have a flare for decorating. In fact, I’m a feeling a little intimidated by designing this palette for you.
Here is your palette, Leo, feel free to make it your own (you know you will!)
Virgo – I want to be sure that the palette I create for you, Virgo, is perfect. Because you like perfect, don’t you? As a child your pencils were always sharp, your homework always on time, and your stuffed animals arranged on your bed, alphabetically. Your organizational skills and attention to detail is awe-inspiring, and you’re often called upon to lend your label-maker to friends.
For you, Virgo, here is a 100% fussy-free palette, just the way you like it:
Libra – It’s hard to be objective about Libras, being a Libra myself. But I’ll try to tone down the effusive praise of this wonderful sign. Libras are magnetic, friendly, and have a passion for beauty. Libras can also be cranky and unreasonable when forced to endure a bad paint scheme.
For my fellow Libra, I offer a paint palette designed to keep your world in balance:
Scorpio – Intense. That pretty much sums you up, Scorpio. You like your coffee strong, your friendships deep, and your colors powerful. Your the first person on your block to try black paint in the dining room, and make it look smashing. You’re a force to be reckoned with, and no one would be silly enough to question the black paint, even if you hadn’t quite gotten it right.
I humbly suggest the following palette for your consideration, Scorpio:
Sagittarius – The globe-trotter! If you’re a Sagittarius reading this right now, you’re most likely sitting in a cafe in an exotic location — or you’re just wishing you were. Your friends and family write your new address in pencil, each time you move. 87.5% of all postcard stamps are purchased by Sagittarians. The secret to a good palette for you is vibrant colors that never get tiresome.
If you’re still here reading this, Sagittarius, this is your exotic new palette:
Capricorn – If pin-stripe could be a paint color, you can be sure it would be part of your paint color palette, Capricorn. Your business acumen is legendary. Chances are that the kid down the street with the lemonade stand is a also a Capricorn. You’re prized by friends and family for your calm and stable personality.
While I can’t give you any financial advice, I can offer up a most sensible color palette that will give you another kind of return on your investment, Capricorn:
Aquarius – I’ve been saving a really fun purple paint color just for you, Aquarius. There is no one in the zodiac that does unique the way you do. My father was an Aquarius. I am inspired by his taste in clothes, in particular the purple paisley shirt he wore in the 70s. Interestingly, he wore it with the striped bell bottoms featuring colors of the desert. Aquarians are the only ones who can pull that look off with aplomb.
Here’s to the Aquarians! A truly original paint color palette for the true originals:
Pisces – The ever-soulful, sensitive, Pisces. You are a soft heart in a sea of sharp edges, and the sign voted most likely to cry at those greeting card commercials on television. Did someone mention the sea? You’re most at home in shades of blue and green, straight from the ocean.
An oceanic paint color palette for you, Pisces. Dive in!
